Travel Writer

Introduction

Travel writing isn’t writing about your family’s vacation. It isn’t writing about what you liked or didn’t like about your last trip. And it definitely isn’t about writing about destinations so that you can travel for free. Travel writing is writing about places, persons, and things in other places--also writing about how to travel, when to travel, and advice on traveling–all with the reader in mind. It’s about relaying your travel experiences to others so that they may emulate them or at the very least not make the same mistakes you did. And it’s writing about things in your own back yard that are exotic to everyone else---a local farmer's market, historic site, restaurant, and museum.

A Travel Writer explores new destinations and shares observations with others using the written word and photos. One of the most important requirements for this type of work is a desire to travel and experience new environments and cultures. Physical stamina, an observant mind and a talent for descriptive language are just a few of the qualities necessary for becoming a travel writer. Strengthening ones writing skills, exploring talent for travel writing, assessing the quality of ones experience, writing a description of ones trip, sharing work with others are the basic requirements of a good writer. The broad scope of the travel writing genre sometimes lends itself to misunderstanding. The genre is sometimes criticized as being hackneyed writing of quality too poor to deserve any degree of literary merit. On the other hand, many works have transcended the travel writing genre to be regarded as literary classics in their own right. The spectrum of travel writing – from travel guide to literary narrative – should not be necessarily being interpreted as increasing in quality. Rather, it is important to understand that different types of travel writing serve different purposes for different audiences.
